Ingredients

Egg and Meat Layer

  • 8 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 pound breakfast sausage, cooked and crumbled

Dairy and Seasonings

  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly with butter to prevent sticking and add rich flavor to the casserole.
  2. Layer Eggs and Sausage: Arrange the sliced hard-boiled eggs evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread the cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage evenly over the eggs to form the base layer.
  3. Mix Creamy Sauce: In a mixing bowl, whisk together milk, heavy cream, mustard powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until fully combined, creating a flavorful custard-like mixture.
  4. Assemble Casserole: Pour the milk and cream mixture evenly over the layered eggs and sausage in the baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded Cheddar cheese evenly on top to cover the entire surface.
  5. Add Butter Dots: Cut the butter into small pieces and dot them over the top of the casserole. This will help form a golden, buttery crust when baked.
  6. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly throughout and the top is golden and slightly crisp. Remove from oven and let it rest briefly before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute the breakfast sausage with cooked bacon or turkey sausage for a different flavor.
  • For a spicier kick, add some crushed red pepper flakes to the creamy sauce mixture.
  • Make sure the eggs are fully hard-boiled to prevent any runny texture in the casserole.
  • This casserole can be prepared the night before; just assemble, cover, and refrigerate, then bake in the morning.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
