Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings are a classic, comforting dessert featuring tender Granny Smith apple halves wrapped in flaky pie crust, baked to golden perfection and soaked in a sweet cinnamon-spiced syrup. This nostalgic recipe combines warm spices, buttery crust, and a luscious vanilla sugar syrup that makes it perfect for cozy family gatherings or a homemade treat anytime.

Ingredients

For the Dumplings:

  • 2 large Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and halved)
  • 1 sheet refrigerated pie crust (or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (cut into small pieces)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

For the Syrup:

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish to prevent sticking. Roll out the refrigerated pie crust on a flat surface and cut it into squares large enough to wrap around the apple halves.
  2. Prepare Apples: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Place each peeled, cored, and halved apple on the center of each dough square. Spoon the sugar and spice mixture evenly over the apple halves, then add small pieces of unsalted butter on top. Carefully wrap the dough around each apple half, sealing the edges securely to form a dumpling, and place them in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Brush and Make Syrup: Brush the tops of the dumplings with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden finish. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and unsalted butter. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely and the syrup is smooth.
  4. Bake: Pour the warm syrup evenly around the dumplings in the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the dumplings turn a beautiful golden brown and the apples inside are tender when pierced with a fork.
  5. Serve: Carefully remove the dumplings from the oven and spoon the syrup over them. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor that balances the sweetness of the syrup.
  • You can substitute refrigerated pie crust with homemade dough for a more rustic texture.
  • Make sure to seal the edges of the dough well to prevent the syrup from leaking during baking.
  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent dessert.
