Ingredients

For the Pastry

  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry (store-bought)

For the Filling

  • 6 slices Streaky Bacon, cooked and chopped
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese (or your favorite cheese)
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 4 oz Cream Cheese (optional)
  • 2 tbsp Sour Cream (optional)

For Seasoning

  • 1 tsp Dried Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric or Paprika (optional)

For Finishing Touches

  • 1 unit Egg Yolk (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet until it is approximately ⅛-inch thick, ensuring an even layer for toppings.
  3. Spread Cream Cheese Mixture: Evenly spread the cream cheese and sour cream (if using) across the rolled-out pastry to create a creamy base.
  4. Add Cheeses: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan evenly over the cream cheese layer for rich flavor.
  5. Season: Lightly sprinkle dried garlic powder, black pepper, and turmeric or paprika (if using) over the cheese layer to enhance the taste.
  6. Layer Bacon: Lay cooked and chopped streaky bacon strips on top of the cheese mixture and gently press them in to help them adhere.
  7. Slice and Twist: Cut the pastry into 1-inch wide strips and twist each strip to form spirals, which will bake into crispy twists.
  8. Egg Wash: Brush each twist gently with the beaten egg yolk for a glossy and golden crust.
  9. Arrange and Bake: Place the twists spaced apart on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
  10. Cool and Serve: Let the twists cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving warm, optionally garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • Using store-bought puff pastry saves time but homemade puff pastry can also be used for a fresher flavor.
  • The cream cheese and sour cream add moisture and richness but can be omitted or substituted with a vegan alternative.
  • Adjust the seasoning according to your preference; paprika can add a smoky flavor, whereas turmeric adds color and subtle earthiness.
  • Ensure strips are twisted tightly to maintain shape during baking.
  • Serve these twists warm for the best texture and flavor.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven to retain crispiness.
