Ingredients

For the Beef:

  • 500g (1 lb) lean ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Garlic Yogurt Sauce:

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 clove garlic, finely grated
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Pinch of salt

For the Wraps:

  • 4 pita breads or flatbreads
  • ½ cup diced cucumber
  • ½ cup chopped tomatoes
  • ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion
  • ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese
  • Fresh parsley or dill, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the Beef: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Then add the ground beef, dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook the beef for 7 to 8 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon as it browns evenly until fully cooked.
  2. Make the Garlic Yogurt Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the plain Greek yogurt, finely grated garlic, fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and a pinch of salt until smooth. If time allows, chill the sauce briefly to let the flavors meld.
  3. Assemble the Wraps: Lightly warm the pita breads in a dry skillet or microwave to soften. Spread a generous spoonful of the garlic yogurt sauce evenly over each pita. Top with the cooked beef, diced cucumber, chopped tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, and crumbled feta cheese. Garnish with fresh parsley or dill for added freshness and flavor. Fold or roll the pita to form wraps and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add some crushed red pepper flakes to the beef while cooking.
  • You can substitute lamb for the beef for a more traditional Greek flavor.
  • Make the garlic yogurt sauce a few hours ahead for deeper flavor integration.
  • To make this recipe gluten-free, use gluten-free pita or flatbreads.
  • Leftover beef can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and makes a great topping for salads or bowls.
