Ingredients
Ground Beef Mixture:
500g ground beef
1 onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup uncooked rice
1/2 cup tomato sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp oregano
Phyllo Dough Layers:
10 phyllo sheets
1/2 cup melted butter or olive oil
Instructions
Sauté onion: In a pan with oil, sauté the finely chopped onion until translucent and fragrant. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking up the meat as it cooks to ensure even browning.
Add rice and seasonings: Stir in the uncooked rice, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Add a splash of water to prevent sticking, then cover and simmer the mixture for 10 minutes until the rice begins to soften and flavors meld.
Layer phyllo sheets: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish and place 5 phyllo sheets in it, brushing each sheet generously with melted butter or olive oil to create crisp, golden layers.
Add meat filling: Evenly spread the prepared ground beef and rice mixture over the layered phyllo sheets in the baking dish.
Add remaining phyllo sheets: Place the remaining 5 phyllo sheets on top of the meat mixture, brushing each again with melted butter or olive oil to ensure a crispy and golden crust.
Bake: Bake the kreatopita in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top phyllo is golden brown and crispy.
Cool and slice: Remove from the oven and allow the kreatopita to cool slightly to set before slicing into portions and serving warm.
Notes
Use fresh phyllo dough sheets and keep them covered with a damp cloth to prevent drying while assembling.
Melted butter will give a richer flavor and crispier texture than olive oil, but both work well.
Adjust seasoning according to taste, and feel free to add fresh herbs like parsley or mint for extra aroma.
Ensure the rice is mostly cooked after simmering to avoid crunchy texture inside the pie.
Letting the pie cool slightly before cutting helps maintain clean slices and prevents the filling from spilling out.
